Congratulations Kim Watson – Active Essex Shining Light 2014

Nominated by Active Essex, Kim Watson is being passed on the baton from the youngest 2013 Shining Light Jamie-Lee Bamford.

Kim is a committed netball coach and umpire.  She is the driving force behind the success of Kats Netball Club, which had over 200 members ranging from 7 – 70 years old.  She coordinates all the senior and junior teams and volunteers and helps out teams in the league with umpires and mentoring for umpires and coaches. Kim recently stepped in to help organise the junior league as the committee could not find any capacity within their ranks to organise this and the junior league would have been lost.  For last year, the league also did not have the capacity to organise the junior tournament and therefore Kim stepped in and the club has continued to run it this year but make it bigger and better and part of the Community Games.

Kim has recruited many volunteers to help over the years and gained funding from local businesses and Active Essex through Community Games.  She has also designed and created a merchandise range of socks, bags and bottles for club members. The Kats Netball club recently gained Club of the Year at the recent Colchester Sports Awards for their work with junior players motivated by Kim.

About her involvement with Community Games, Kim commented: "The Community Games has allowed us to take a simple sports competition and make it bigger and better so that all the family can take part, not just the players.  We are hoping to attract lots of members of the community to our colourful tournament this weekend (8th June) and hope we can inspire more people of all ages and abilities to take up the sport."
